The Renaissance witnessed a flourishing of art, poetry, and music that the world had not seen before and has not experienced since. Composers active during this era were provided with a wealth of poetic resources from which to draw inspiration. However, one of the resources that provided a unique non-secular perspective was from one of the most exquisitely descriptive and emotionally stirring texts of the Bible: Song of Solomon, which offers both a biblical view of romantic love and a fascinating study in allegory. GRAMMY® Award winning conductor Jason Harris leads Schola Cincinnati in this exploration of sacred poetry and music through composers who deftly merge the frivolity and amorousness of the madrigal and chanson with the austerity and profound spirituality of their church music.
